Symphony No. 6 in A major

Anton Bruckner

Herbert von Karajan / Berlin Philharmonic

1979

Top choice. 'Fantastic sound quality.' Karajan is dynamic, bringing out the drama and 'epicness' of the outer movements, while the slow movement is 'very lush and gorgeous'.

Otto Klemperer / New Philharmonia Orchestra

1964

A famous, slightly different version. More grounded, with a feeling of 'austere majesty.' The slow movement is beautifully phrased, and the powerful brass come out strongly.

Wilhelm Furtwängler / Berlin Philharmonic

1942 Incomplete recording (Movements 2, 3, 4 only). 1940s sound, but fairly good.

A 'bleeding chunk' (movements 2-4 only), but worth hearing for the 'nobility and beauty of the adagio and the excitement of the scherzo and the finale'.
