Violin Sonatas (Nos. 1-10)

Ludwig van Beethoven

Violin, Piano

Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazi

early 70s Excellent stereo.

Gil's recommendation for all 10. Perlman has that wonderful, sweet tone and excellent virtuosity, and Ashkenazi matches him. The 'Kreutzer' sonata is impeccable. A great way to get to know these works.

Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Carl Seemann

1959 Pretty good stereo sound.

A bit rougher around the edges than Perlman, but really dramatic and intense. He really just goes for it dramatically.

Fritz Kreisler, Franz Rupp

1930s Vintage recording.

The king of the violin. Kreisler brings his aristocratic taste and the beauty in the way he phrased things. Proverbial playing from another age; unmissable insights.

Bronisław Huberman, Ignaz Friedman

1930 Historic recording of the 'Kreutzer' Sonata.

Gil's desert island choice (for the Kreutzer). A famous 1930 recording that is a 'performance for the ages.' Two interpretive giants with such freedom, where interpretation and feeling lead everything.
