Mélodies (Selected)

Claude Debussy

Gérard Souzay, Dalton Baldwin

1961

Top choice. From the 'king of chanson,' Gérard Souzay. He is immersed in the style, singing with a sensuous line, gorgeous tone, and wonderful character. A perfect introduction to French chanson.

Régine Crespin, John Wustman

1967

A highly recommended selection of 'Chansons de Bilitis' (coupled with her top-choice Berlioz). Crespin 'really gets that style,' singing in a sultry, dreamy, and wistful manner.

Maggie Teyte, Gerald Moore

1940s Mono recording.

From an English singer who knew Debussy and specialized in French song. She was immersed in the style, singing with a beautiful high, bell-like soprano sound. Part of a priceless set of French songs.

Maggie Teyte, Alfred Cortot

mid-1930s Mono recording.

An earlier recording of 'Chansons de Bilitis' and 'Fête Galante' with Teyte in better voice. Both artists 'really dig into the music'.
